What $300 Can Do in Kibera Slum in Nairobi, Kenya

In October 2005 a team from Word of Grace and Grace Community Church visited the Kibera Slum in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is the largest slum in Africa. It is estimated that more than 700,000 people live in this slum.

As we walked through the slum, amid raw sewage, garbage and numerous smells, we came upon a small oasis -- a church and school operated by Slum Outreach Ministries. Here our team was able to meet some of the staff and students, worship with local believers, and see how the grace of God can change the lives of children and adults alike.

Bita Adair, the director of Godzone at Word of Grace was part of our team. When she returned to Mesa, she encouraged our children to raise money for the children of Kibera slum. Over a very short period of time, more than US$1,800 was raised. $300 of it was sent to Slum Outreach Ministries in Kibera slum.

This is what $300 can do in Kibera.
  • buy beans and maizemeal for 125 children for one month.
  • pay the salary of a teacher for two months
  • purchase charcoal, cooking oil and water for one month for the school.

Pretty amazing, isn't it!

AIDS in Africa Prayer Meeting -- February 27

In 2005 Word of Grace began partnering with churches in Africa as they build faith, generate hope and minister in communities devastated by HIV/AIDS. Our two primary areas of focus are Nairobi, Kenya and Lilongwe, Malawi.

The foundation of all we do is prayer. Join us as we pray for these two nations, for our ministry partners, and for the teams that are preparing to go to Kenya and Malawi in April, May and June.

Homes of Hope -- Ensenada, Mexico

From January 26-29, 2006 a team of 15 people from Word of Grace travelled to Ensenada, Mexico as part of the Homes of Hope ministry. Based at the Youth With A Mission center in Ensenada, the Word of Grace team built a home for the Vasquez Ramirez family -- one of the poorest of the poor families living on the outskirts of this city.

The team had a wonderful time building the home together with the Youth With A Mission staff and the Ramirez family.

SE Asia Tsunami Relief Efforts

On December 26, 2004 a massive earthquake struck Indonesia that resulted in a tsunami that killed more than 400,000 people and left more than 5.5 million people homeless in 11 nations. The people of Word of Grace responded to this tragedy by contributing more than $54,000 to relief and reconstruction efforts.

While 11 nations were affected by the Tsunami, Indonesia was the hardest hit in terms of loss of life and physical damage. As a result, most of our aid went to Indonesia.

Through our ministry partners, Word of Grace was able to invest in the following:
$6,100 to World Relief for the victims of the Tsunami and earthquake in Sri Lanka and India.
$10,000 to Indopartners for immediate relief supplies in Indonesia, including:
- 5,000 blankets
- medicine, food and water
- 10 tons of rice
- used clothing
$1,000 to Sowers International for relief work in Thailand.
$10,000 to IndoPartners to build a community center in Aceh province of Indonesia.
$12,500 to Food for the Hungry for school supplies and uniforms to enable 600 children to attend school for one year. The parents of these children were either killed in the tsunami or have lost everything and do not have money to send their children to school.
$12,000 to World Relief to build homes for tsunami victims in Indonesia.
